Characteristics

Plants 1-15 cm. tall, the base of the blade cuneate, above expanding irregularly lobed, generally irregularly or sometimes pinnately divided into ligulate or linear lobes which may become several decimeters long; in section the cells of the midline region much taller than those of the margin, the thallus much thicker, 100 µ or somewhat more; the margins entire to irregularly ruffled and crenate with a somewhat paler central portion.
